The Cooperativa Olivicoltori Sestresi was founded in 1978 by 23 farmers who, after attending a course on olive growing organized by the Municipality of Sestri Levante, decided to establish a cooperative to promote agricultural development.
Over time, the olive groves, the plots of land and the connecting paths have been restored and have become an asset for tourism, too.
In 1980, the Cooperative built the Villa Ragone facility, its current headquarters, and installed the oil mill thanks to grants and subsidized financing for land improvement. This intervention led to a rapid and continuous growth of the Cooperative’s membership, which reached 770 members in the municipalities of Sestri Levante, Casarza Ligure, Castiglione Chiavarese, Moneglia, Ne, Cogorno, Lavagna, Chiavari and Carasco.
The Cooperative consolidated its activities in the last decade of the 20th century with an ever-increasing commitment to promoting extra virgin olive oil. At present, it owns 600 hectares of olive groves planted on terraces on the hills of the Ligurian Riviera di Levante, in particular between Sestri Levante and La Spezia.
