Bread and oil is back. And kids love it even more. Especially if they can have fun learning about and tasting DOP Riviera Ligure extra-virgin olive oil. Authentically Ligurian. All these statements were proven true on the morning of 29 May. We are in Sestri Ponente, the beating heart of the Ponente in Genoa. The scene is the Mercato del Ferro: a classic nineteenth century covered market made in iron, full of charm and bursting with colours, a testament to the Ligurian industrial development. What was once considered the height of modernity is now the site for the revival of tradition. As part of the project “Oltre Bampé”, an educational meeting organised by the Extra-virgin Olive Oil Protection Consortium took place for the schools in the area of Genoa, in particular for the children from class 4A at “Rodari”. The workshop included an introduction to the qualities of DOP Riviera Ligure oil, with presentations from the agronomist Walter Orsi, among others. The appointment continued with the “DOP Riviera Ligure oil game”, exploiting the large spaces of the market for the multicoloured game board. Amidst questions, throws of the dice and kids’ curiosity, the meeting encouraged an even greater knowledge of DOP Riviera Ligure oil even within the local context, also among younger generations. All this was rounded off with a welcome snack of bread with DOP Riviera Ligure oil. Needless to say, great enthusiasm all round. The “Oltre Bampé” initiative project forms part of the European Marittimo-Maritime project and aims to promote the 0 km Simona school catering service. The Municipality of Genoa is a partner in the initiative and has worked with many schools in the city, enabling hundreds of children to discover the quality of the food in their local area.
