We start with the Azienda Olivicola Canaiella owned by Filippina Berruti, nestling in the unspoilt hills of Legino, on the outskirts of Savona. The oil in question is a PDO Riviera Ligure with the additional geographic reference of Riviera del Ponente Savonese that convinced the demanding judges of the Orciolo d’Oro 2016. In the various contests that go to make up this by now well-known event linked to the Malatesta hills near Pesaro, Canaiella competed with other Italian PDO and PGI oils. Winning four drops of oil, as symbolic as they are important, in a limited group of PDO and PGI oils. Canaiella has character and also obtained an honorable mention in the medium fruity category. It is one of the 15 top oils, also including an organically produced PDO. Character, we said, decision, complexity, persistence. And that was by no means the end as Canaiella then went on to the finals in the Sirena d’Oro awards in Sorrento.
