An interesting nutritional education initiation is underway called “Pesto in the Classroom!“: 23,320 booklets for the fourth and fifth-grade classes of 425 primary schools in Liguria.
The project, which is co-funded by the Councillorship for Agriculture of the Region of Liguria was enthusiastically joined by the PDO Riviera Ligure Olive Oil Protection Consortium as well as the PDO Genoese Basil and Parmigiano Reggiano and Sardinian Pecorino Cheese protection consortia.
The initiative aims to draw attention to the typicality of one of the most famous regional products. A recipe of 7 ingredients that, in a cultural and geographic sense, unites Liguria, or better all of Italy, since, if well made, it uses 4 DOP products.
This is why “Pesto in the Classroom!” was developed: a 32-page publication to discover the ingredients, recipes, traditions and characteristics of pesto produced by Edicolors (a Genoese publisher and communications agency) and strongly supported by the Councillorship for Agriculture of the Region of Liguria.
“The preparation of pesto can easily be proposed to the children as a teaching laboratory and has the advantage of being able to develop important educational components such as the cultural heritage, history and geography of our area and sensory and nutritional education that can also be addressed through the typicality and quality of PDO Riviera Ligure Olive Oil,” said Carlo Siffredi, President of the Protection Consortium.
