Olive trees are in full blossom in Liguria, a wondrous sight (and a sign of good omen) to be enjoyed by local dwellers as well as by Italian visitors all along the region’s steep ascents.
“Olive tree flowers are not showy, and most people may not notice them. However, this is not the case of Ligurian olive farming professionals – says Carlo Siffredi, the President of the PDO Riviera Ligure Evo Protection Consortium -. After a low yield season, trees have been pruned and groomed. In the countryside, during the lockdown period several people kept on working, in the full respect of regulations. Weather conditions were quite good, clear windy days which help pollination”. For those who look for a good dose of open-air wellness after the lockdown, several areas in Liguria provide the sight of tidy rows of olive trees, their colour white and soft.
“It is difficult to forecast if abundance in blossoming will correspond to abundance in fruit (and later in oil) – comments Carlo Siffredi. Despite the emergency, the members of the Consortium know how to look ahead to the new season and harvest, safety being a priority in their daily work”.
