Chiavari: the eleventh edition of the Mediterranean Fencing Championships will be hosted by the Ligurian city from 31 January to 2 February 2014.
This event, created to promote and disseminate fencing in the Mediterranean basin, has grown in importance, not only in the sport field but also as a symbol of the strengthening of relationships between the countries bordering the “Mare Nostrum”.
In terms of sports, the athletes, aged 15 to 20, are the excellent young players and the fencing future of the 20 member countries from 3 continents, and some of them are destined to occupy the podium in future Olympic Games and World Championships.
The Italian athletes are expected to be the stars of the event, after their success in the 2013 edition held in Algiers, where they won most of the medals.
But there’s more than fencing planned for the three days in Chiavari: the Championships are also the perfect setting to raise awareness of the food and wine symbols of the Ligurian Riviera.
Thanks to the Region of Liguria and the PDO Riviera Ligure Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Protection Consortium and the PDO Genoese Basil Consortium, there will be a presentation of excellent regional products. Real tasting workshops, where you can watch pesto being prepared, learn how to select the best ingredients, recognize the best olive oil and taste the results.
During the Championships, the platforms will leave room for a few moments to completely different athletes: armed not with foils and sabres but mortars and pestles and protected by their aprons, they will compete in a stage of the World Pesto Championships, whose finals will be held in Genoa on 29 March 2014.
